Guillermo del Toro
Lili’s Pick: Pan’s Labyrinth
Lanie’s pick: Blade 2
As two of Guillermo del Toro’s biggest fans, my sister and I knew we’d be dipping into his dark and dreamy filmography multiple times. With this first round of GDT classics, we stuck with some of our respective, personal favs: Pan’s Labyrinth, the film that introduced me to the director and made me fall in love with the childlike wonderment that accents each of his films, and Blade 2, a representation of GDT’s versatility within the world of filmmaking—a vampire flick that stands unique in its approach, according to my vampire connoisseur of a sister. These films have entirely different tones, but both possess GDT’s trademark aesthetic of grotesque beauty, and present interesting characters whose stories demand to be told.
