Lili’s Pick: An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn

Lanie’s Pick: Extra Ordinary

We’re no strangers to the strange and unusual, my sister and I, are strange and unusual—although we’d prefer a Terry Gilliam flick over David Lynch any day. This week we picked comedies that when asked the question: “Is it funny funny? or funny strange?” they answer: “yes.” An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn was wacky as fuck, in the most intriguing and unpredictable ways. Aubrey Plaza and Jemaine Clement had a surprising amount of chemistry and somehow, I really believed Emile Hirsch as a villain. There’s a surprisingly compelling story among the idioms and idiosyncrasies here, and if you stick around to see how it ends, I doubt you’ll be disappointed. And Extra Ordinary, with its effortless charm and unsuspecting wisdom, quickly became one of my favorite films of 2020. Maeve Higgins is a star, and Will Forte was the most Will Forte he’s ever been. I cannot get over how delightfully sweet this was, watching it felt like meeting a new friend.
